Met het keuzemenu voor me besloot ik maar om op het eerste thema te klikken dat mijn aandacht trok: Kleur.
Het artikel dat mij gelijk opviel gaat over gradients. Ik ben het artikel gaan lezen en begon met stukjes tekst kopiëren die mij het meest aanspraken. In die zinnen ben ik de stukken tekst wat mij het meest belangrijk leek en ik later in een werk zou kunnen gebruiken roze gaan kleuren. Ook heb ik kleine opmerkingen in de tekst gezet (italic en grijs gekleurd). Dit is voor de rest van de dag ook mijn aanpak geweest.
De stukken tekst die ik het meest interessant vind:
What it is: A digital or print effect where one color fades into another. Typically rendered in soft or pastel tones.
Why you’re seeing it everywhere: Gradients are the confluence of three different trends: Light and Space art, vaporwave, and bisexual lighting.
In the art and design world, Light and Space — developed in the 1960s and ’70s — has been experiencing a revival thanks to its Instagramability.

Harmon compares the Recess branding to a sunset so beautiful you can’t help but stare (or take a picture) however busy you are. Changes to the sky are even more pronounced in Los Angeles, where Harmon’s studio is now based. “The quality of light in LA is something miraculous,” he says. Gradients might be a manifestation of longing for sunshine and surf.
Vaporwave is a musical and aesthetic movement (started in the early 2010s) that spliced ambient music, advertising, and imagery from when the internet started.
“bisexual lighting is a slang in the queer community for neon lighting with high emphasis on pinks, purples, and blues in film.”
She says the appeal of gradients is “the illusion of dimension, and giving 2-D designs 3-D appeal.”
There’s an inherent progression in gradients, you are being taken through something. Like that progression of Live Laugh Love. Of starting at one point and ending at another point.
Gradients are also boundaryless. In 2016, artist Wolfgang Tillmans used gradients in his anti-Brexit poster campaign. Through gradients, designers have found the perfect metaphor for subjectivity in an era when even the word “fact” is up for debate. “Gradients are a visual manifestation of all of these different spectrums that we live on,” including those of politics, gender, and sexuality, says Lorenz. “Before, I think we lived in a binary world. [Gradients are] a very modern representation of the world.” <<< Dit verbaasde me. Dacht altijd dat gradients gewoon mooie plaatjes waren zonder enig nut. Dat het zelfs politiek gebruikt kan worden opent mijn ogen en vergroot mijn liefde voor gradients een beetje.
Behang met gradients wordt vaak gebruikt in slaapkamers en meditatieruimtes. Gradients draagt een rustgevend effect met zich mee, net als een zonsondergang.
Wat zijn mijn gedachtes na het lezen van dit artikel?
Door dit artikel ben ik wel anders naar gradients gaan kijken. Ze hebben meer functie dan ik ooit had verwacht. Het was soepel te lezen en daarom een goed begin van mijn onderzoek. Het roept geen vragen bij mij op laat geen grote indruk achter. Snel door naar het volgende artikel!

Ik schrijf zelf best veel. Hou al jaren een dagboek bij en de Nederlandse taal en ik worden steeds closer. Dus besloot ik uit het keuzemenu ‘writing’ te kiezen.
‘What has writing got to do with design?’ is de titel die mij het meest aanpreekt. Deze vraag is namelijk wel vaker in mijn hoofd langsgekomen. Ik hou van design en ik hou van schrijven. Ik zie het als twee verschillende dingen, maar ben benieuwd naar de relatie tussen die twee.

‘I don’t have to design in my English class, so why should I write in my design class?’ It was as though I had asked my students grow Streptococcus in a Petri dish in lieu of specifying type. Translating verbal messages into visual forms is the essence of graphic design, I argued. The manipulation of language and typography is the primary ingredient that distinguishes our work from that of illustrators, who deal exclusively with imagery. So why the intense resistance, both in the classroom and in the profession? Graphic design is neither strictly visual nor strictly verbal. It is the marriage of the two.
where designers profess to admire one thing (culture) but base their practice on another (commerce), too little attention has been paid, both in the academy and in the annuals, to the relevance of writing to graphic design. Writing can feed the profession in two ways: through the challenge of critical analysis and through the exploratory freedom of self-initiated work. <<< Mijn werk komt vaak uit mijn persoonlijke ervaringen waar ik over schrijf. Dat is vaak de motivatie en startpunt van mijn werken. Heeft mijn schrijven toch meer te maken met mijn werk dan ik denk?
The profession needs challenge from within through the reflective process writing can bring to it. Long overdue, such critical introspection can help broaden our understanding of what we accept as natural. We can then choose to accept it as it is, or to change it for the better. <<< mooie zin.
With complete control over all aspects of the communication, the graphic designer as author, in the tradition of Marinetti et al, has the freedom to explore more deeply the relationship between content and form.
The role of the author, in the traditional sense of a writer, is considered beyond the realm of the graphic designer, despite our canonisation of works of total authorship. We admire the giants of design history who wrote manifestos, books, or self-published periodicals whose form was an expression of the ideas they expounded.
Unfortunately, many designers have the ability to write, but don’t. This reticence may result from two things: a professional identity bound too closely to the demands of industry, and the way this constrictive self-definition is reinforced through an educational stance that thwarts the advance of visual and verbal exploration and inhibits critical reflection.
But while the over-emphasis on business concerns can be a hindrance, I would argue that the more difficult obstacle to overcome is the anti-verbal bias of much education, which renders designers voiceless, opinionless, mindless. It is considered outside our role to analyse the content of our work in relation to politics, theory, economics, morals, and so on. This is a fallacy.
Students can use writing to build intellectual muscle and to provide themselves with the mental tools to evaluate ideas, allowing them to adopt from the outset a responsible position of questioning and analysis. No longer a neutral medium through which another’s ideas flow, the student, and later the practitioner, is an active participant with a stake in the communication process.
the practice of manipulating words and expression feeds a designer’s ability to communicate. Designers should write not in order to become better writers, but to become better designers.
Wat zijn mijn gedachtes na het lezen van dit artikel?
Oké, schrijven en grafisch ontwerp gaan dus heel goed samen. Ze moeten zelfs samen gaan volgens dit artikel. Dit geeft echt een top gevoel. Heb gelijk zin om te schrijven. Ik schrijf veel, ik design veel. Hebben de dingen die ik schijf en ontwerp wel veel overeenkomsten? Schijven is eigenlijk ontwerpen met woorden, toch? Aha, dit is natuurlijk ook waar de theorie lessen voor zijn! Oeps, dat ik die link nooit bewust heb gelegd.
Dit artikel is zeker een eye opener. Had het belang van schrijven in combinatie met design nog niet zo bekeken. Het is fijn om bevestiging te krijgen dat schijven belangrijk is, omdat ik zelf ook waarde aan hecht. Er wordt gezegd in het artikel dat je veel moet schrijven, maar waarover precies? Deze directe link met design en schrijven motiveert om meer te schrijven en ook niet alleen over mijn gedachtes en gevoelens, maar ook over mijn werk en dat van anderen.

Lezen over schrijven bevalt me goed dus ik besloot nog een artikel van het thema ‘writing’ te kiezen. Dit keer Words as material door Nicole Fenton. Ik kwam op deze titel uit door een vraag die ik na het lezen van het artikel hiervoor bedacht: Is schrijven ontwerpen met woorden? Toen ik de titel ‘Words as material’ zag moest ik daar wel op klikken.
De stukken tekst die ik het meest interessant vind:
“If you are a poet, you will see clearly that there is a cloud floating in every sheet of paper. Without a cloud, there will be no rain; without rain, the trees cannot grow; and without trees, we cannot make paper. The cloud is essential for the paper to exist.”
Thich Nhat Hanh calls this concept interbeing. He goes on to say that the sun is also in the sheet of paper; and the lumberjack who cut down the tree; and his parents; and the wheat that made his morning bread; and so on. All of these things make it possible for the paper to exist. <<< Dit zet me aan het denken over hoe alles met elkaar verbonden is. Echt alles.
Our work depends on many things: time, money, technology, materials, constraints, and most importantly, the lives, attention, and experiences of other people.
If we look closely, we can see that people are at the heart of everything we make.
Going back to Thich Nhat Hanh, I believe that writing is part of every design. If you can clearly define what you’re making and articulate its value, the steps to bring it out into the world will go much faster. It’s easy to put pixels together when you’ve already made decisions. And since we work across systems and borders, there’s no better way to articulate design than with writing.
Language makes it possible for us to navigate places and relationships; to express needs and requirements; to name and categorize things; and to understand our place in the universe.
But I’ve also come to see writing as a material in itself. Something we can play with and manipulate. Something that can change over time as questions come up in the design process or an idea evolves. Writing can be a tool for talking to ourselves when we’re still figuring things out. A sort of mirror or feedback system.<<< Dit is precies hoe ik werk. Hoe ik mijn gedachtes en ideeën ontwikkel. Bij mij begint bijna elk werk met mijn gedachtes opschrijven. A way to understand and articulate design.
“What people somehow (inadvertently, I’m sure) forgot to mention when we were children was that we need to make messes in order to find out who we are and why we are here—and, by extension, what we’re supposed to be writing.”
I like this idea of writing as a way of figuring things out and exploring possibilities—and that willingness to experiment fits right in with design. <<< dit resoneert met mij.
As designers, we’re often the people defining the problem and coming up with solutions.<<< Ik houd van deze manier van denken. Dat we een actieve rol kunnen hebben en verantwoordelijkheid moeten nemen
Using words as material along the way will always make our work better. Clarity moves us forward, where ambiguity can pull us back. If we place our words carefully, we can build a path for ourselves right out of the mud.
Wat zijn mijn gedachtes na het lezen van dit artikel?
Ik kan mezelf terugvinden in dit artikel. Nog meer dan het vorige artikel. Schrijven gebruiken om dingen uit te zoeken en mogelijkheden te ontdekken is wat ik al jaren doe in mijn dagboeken. Ook begin ik mijn opdrachten met schijven. Tijdens het lezen van dit artikel had ik elke keer van die ‘oh dat doe ik ook!’ momentjes. Leuk en inspirerend.
In dit artikel stond ook veel over communiceren met opdrachtgevers en andere tips over beter functioneren in het bedrijfsleven. De stukken tekst die ik uit het artikel heb gehaald hebben hier niks mee te maken. Heb alle zakelijke stukken wel gelezen maar werd er niet warm of koud van. Denk dat dit komt, omdat ik nog niet echt in die fase zit ofzo…

Ik ben nog niet uitgekeken op het thema schrijven. Snel ben ik door de rest van de artikelen binnen het thema ‘writing’ gevlogen tot ik iets vond wat makkelijk te lezen was om dit bezoek aan mijn bron af te sluiten voor vandaag. Ik kwam uit op If you are writing an essay or a thesis door Chappell Ellison.
Ik was van plan ook uit dit artikel de meest interessante dingen te halen, maar besloot het toch niet te doen. Elke letter in dit gedicht spreekt me aan dus keuze maken is lastig. Het is nutteloos om er stukjes uit te halen want samen brengen de zinnen veel meer.
Wat zijn mijn gedachtes na het lezen van dit artikel?
Dit is even heel verfrissend. Na al die lange, in moeilijk Engels geschreven, artikelen is dit luchtige gedicht heel fijn om te lezen. De manier waarop het is vormgegeven, met de grote ruimtes tussen de zinnen, besteed je meer aandacht per zin. Als ik binnenkort weer iets ga schrijven ga ik het aan de hand doen van dit gedicht. Dit gedicht benaderd een andere manier van kijken/schijven en tegelijkertijd motiveert het om te schrijven. Fijn.
reflectie na afloop van website bezoek
Ik ben heel moe nu en moet echt even naar buiten met dit mooie weer. Het lezen duurt langer dan ik had verwacht. Ik moet best wat vertalingen opzoeken en wil alles heel goed begrijpen dus dat kost energie. Wel voel ik me super gemotiveerd. Ik heb drie artikelen gelezen over schrijven en ze brachten allemaal enthousiasme met zich mee. Ik heb nu even niet de puf om te schijven, maar hoop dat wel ergens in de komende dagen te kunnen doen.
Opvallend was dat bij het eerste artikel de stukjes tekst die ik er uit heb gehaald meer een samenvatting vormde. Hoe meer artikelen ik las hoe meer die stukjes echt mijn interesses waren uit het artikel.
De vragen die na dit website bezoek in mijn hoofd zweven:
Is er een goed of fout met schrijven? Hoe kan ik beter worden in het schijven over design? Zijn er specifieke regels voor het schijven over design? Wat gebeurd er als ik mijn dagboeken combineer met mijn werk? Heb ik onbewust meer dingen die ik heb geschreven al gebruikt in mijn werk? Waar komt die grens tussen schrijven en design vandaan? Zijn er overeenkomsten tussen het ‘type mens’ ontwerper en schrijver?
Mijn werksituatie nu was op de bank met mijn laptop op mijn schoot. Ik werd wel echt snel duf dus ga morgen proberen buiten te werken. Kijken of dat nog iets interessants met zich meebrengt.
