Visual performance

Made together with Fleur Marin Roorda (https://www.instagram.com/fleur.marin/)

What started it?

Visual Performance was a school project that Fleur Marin and I used as a opportunity to make this effect that we had in mind for a while. This effect was inspired by the work of Peter Greenway’s artwork projecting on Leonardo’s Last Supper (https://www.factum-arte.com/pag/36/peter-greenaway-on-leonardo-s-last-supper)

How did we make it?

It’s a flat painting we projected light onto with a projector.

The process we developed is as follows:

  1. We took a picture of the painting and we created a depth map and normal map using software. It looks a bit wonky but it’s not noticeable when it’s actually projected on the painting
  2. With this, we created a tessellated plane with the depth map and normal map
  3. Added this plane and a light into Unity
  4. Made the light rotate around the painting using the mouse
  5. We send the camera output of unity to Resolume Arena to map it onto the painting
