Dance beam

Interactive visuals for the dance floor

Dancefloors can be pretty boring, so what to do to make it better? The obvious answer is a laser that interacts with people dancing. The only thing people need to do while clubbing, is get up on the platforms and their laser version is visible on the wall.

Dance beam in practice

This all started with a school project. I knew I wanted to work with a laser, so this fascination was my starting point.
Part of the assignment was to make it for the context of the schools winter party. This inspired me to design something for the dance floor.

I started experimenting, making various versions, playtesting and improving.

One thing I realised while making it, is that it would be better if there was an component to it that allowed people to connect with each other. So it ended up being for two people, standing on two platforms dancing with the lasers showing their moves on the wall.
I also added some effects attached to the hands to make things more interesting.
