ABO BLOK 3

Filter Painting

I first thought of what filter I wanted to use, and I immediately thought of connecting my sisters head with mine by stretching it, since we always say we share one braincell. This way the painting also would be quite strange which I really like. I also wanted to make the picture a bit sad, that’s why I used black and white. This first painting took quite some time because I tried to make it ‘realistic’. So for the other paintings I wanted to do more abstract paintings with more different techniques.

Overall I’m quite satisfied with the results, especially the first 2. In the first one I think the stretching effect turned out nice, and it are the most realistic people I’ve ever painted, so my technique is improving, yes! In the second one I really like how the colors turned out.

I think what also would have been nice is that the lines weren’t all sharp, more like a blurry painting. So that’s what I would like to experiment still.

Painting over my own pictures

With the assignment I found it very hard to start painting. I think because there was already so much going on in the pictures, so at first I didn’t really know what to paint on it. But in the end I just started doing it and then it went pretty well. With this I really just wanted to try a lot of different techniques. I also look for different materials I could use to paint with. I barely painted with a brush with this assignment.

I really like that I used a lot of different techniques. Also for myself to see what works well and what I can also use in the future on other paintings, instead of using a brush.

I do think I could have done a bit more experiments with color. I did use color, but the colors aren’t really popping in my opinion. So I would like to do more experiments where I go a bit crazy with colors, and just find more different techniques which would be fun to use later on as well.

Painting over news pictures

With these pictures I found it even harder to paint over it. I think because these pictures had a message or a topic I really care about, and I didn’t just want to paint over it (which in the end I kinda did, because I focussed more on the technique than on the picture). I like that with these pictures I found new techniques again which work really nice.

In the future I do want to try to combine the picture and what I paint over it better, so it really tells a story (instead of just painting over it). I did that a bit with the pictures with the ice, but I don’t like how these turned out haha. With the picture with the umbrellas which I made into flowers I do like how it turned out. That is also my favorite from these five. With this one I was able to make it into a story a bit more since the picture was about burn-outs (weird though that they used a picture like this for that. Almost like oh it’s raining, we’re sad) which I tried to turn into a flower field.

Collage painting

With this assignment I had to totally switch around the way I usually paint. I like to start with a darker background and go over it with lighter colors and make layers that way. But with this (inspired by Julie Mehretu) I had to start with light colors first and add darker colors later. So for quite some time I really didn’t like how this painting was turning out, because again it wasn’t really popping. But as I just made more and more layers and finally got to use darker colors it turned out better.

For this picture I kinda wanted to combine this whole blok 3 in one painting. So I used the color combination blue and orange, which I used in the first assignment. And I used a lot of techniques I discoverd in the second assignment, and of course bits from my pictures. But I did really wanted to make my own composition, so I used shapes that I found interesting in the pictures, and made it really abstract in this painting. Also because I don’t paint a lot of abstract paintings like this, so it would be a bit of a new experience.

I do like how it turned out. Especially when you zoom in, because there are a lot of ‘hidden’ details. I did find it hard to decide when it was finished though. Because I do think it’s a bit crowded and there is a lot going on, but on the other hand it doesn’t feel finished for some reason. But I can’t figure out what it is. But I think I just have to do it more to work on that feeling of when something is finished. I also want to experiment what happens when I give a lot of attention and do some more fun things with the background instead of what is in the front. Because I kept the background quite simple here.

I really liked this. I have never done something like this, so it was a whole experience. I didn’t want to go crazy on my paintings because I just wanted to see what I could do with it first, and focus more on the program. Maybe in the future I’ll try some crazier paintings.

Since everything was so new I liked everything that was happening haha. I also really like that the brushstrokes are very visible, so you can see very well that it’s painted.

I used the blue shape the most, because that covered my whole face and you could still see a whole face in it when you replaced it. So that one turned out the creepiest which is fun.
