With this assignment I had to totally switch around the way I usually paint. I like to start with a darker background and go over it with lighter colors and make layers that way. But with this (inspired by Julie Mehretu) I had to start with light colors first and add darker colors later. So for quite some time I really didn’t like how this painting was turning out, because again it wasn’t really popping. But as I just made more and more layers and finally got to use darker colors it turned out better.
For this picture I kinda wanted to combine this whole blok 3 in one painting. So I used the color combination blue and orange, which I used in the first assignment. And I used a lot of techniques I discoverd in the second assignment, and of course bits from my pictures. But I did really wanted to make my own composition, so I used shapes that I found interesting in the pictures, and made it really abstract in this painting. Also because I don’t paint a lot of abstract paintings like this, so it would be a bit of a new experience.
I do like how it turned out. Especially when you zoom in, because there are a lot of ‘hidden’ details. I did find it hard to decide when it was finished though. Because I do think it’s a bit crowded and there is a lot going on, but on the other hand it doesn’t feel finished for some reason. But I can’t figure out what it is. But I think I just have to do it more to work on that feeling of when something is finished. I also want to experiment what happens when I give a lot of attention and do some more fun things with the background instead of what is in the front. Because I kept the background quite simple here.
