Filter a photograph through painting

This is the picture I have chosen for this assignment. This is a picture of a river in France. I like the lines and the stones in it. In the middle there is a boy who sits on a big rock, with his back towards the camera. I thought this picture was interesting to paint over.

The picture on the left is the first one I made. I wanted to give it a old picture look. So I made it black and white. I also tried to give it a pixelated look. I used a thick brush with not much paint to reach that pixelated look. On some spots I tried to give it some lens flair. So I made some diagonal lines.

The one on the right is one where I wanted to give it round shapes. I also wanted to give it the same kind of colors as the original picture and I wanted it to be more abstract. So I drew the big lines in the picture first as an outline and then I filled it in.

Next time I want to paint more precies and cleaner and use thinner brushes.

Paint over picture of your own

This is the picture I have chosen for this assignment. This is a homeless man I photographed last year. I like the way he shows his art. He makes Mandelas for money to take care for homeless teenagers. His look, the kindness and his art was something I wanted to give attention. So I did in my next 10 pictures.

I also painted over different kind of papers. I used photo paper, handmade paper and normal paper. I realized that different kind of paper does a lot to the results. I really liked the photo paper because when the paint is dry you have a matte and shiny look. I also like the one with the dirty look. Because of the paper and the dry brush you create an old and dirty look. I also had different kind of techniques to apply the paint. I did some finger painting, used another paper to apply the paint and folded some papers to create weird shapes. Next time I want to cut off those white lines around the pictures!

Painting over news photo’s

On the left you have the original pictures and on the right the one I painted over.

I really liked this assignment. The one where the picture is small and I paint over and around the picture, I like the most. I painted the world bigger than the picture shows. That is a really interesting thing to do. In this assignment I also used different kind of paper, for the matte and shiny effect I used before. What I am less exited about, are the balloons in the second picture, I wanted it give it a childish look, but now it is too childish I think.

Make a collage painting in large format

Collage

My painting

For this assignment I used 7 different photo’s. I made a collage of those 7 photo’s and then I painted it mostly like the collage. In this painting I used four techniques. The background is painted with a template and spray-paint. For the blue-purple world I put some paint on the painting self and then dapped it with toiletpaper and the bubbles are made with drink glasses. For the butterfly I used folding technique. And at last, usual painting with brushes.

I think I really improved since last block. Last block I didn’t used as much as techniques I wanted, but this time I really tried to use more techniques. I could’ve done some more experimenting with the background. I wanted to give it a galaxy look, but unfortunately didn’t come out as how I wanted it to look. For next time I have to do more studies about the technique before I apply it.

Instagram painting filters

I really really liked this assignment. Unfortunately my laptop didn’t like it as much as I did. So big things couldn’t be made or my laptop just stopped working. But there are not things I really wanted different, but maybe bigger. For the last one with the blue circle and pink stripe I decided to post it on instagram and Facebook. I really liked the lessons. I have learned a lot. I experimented much with paper and techniques. I also liked the last assignment very much. Im really satisfied with the results. Some are less beautiful than I would have wanted, but that is part of the process. For the next time I wanted to do more studies about the filters. Soon when there is more time I am going to make new filters!
